Supplying humankind with food and other resources (e.g., those needed for the construction of infrastructure, production of goods, or energy) has a major impact on biodiversity and the natural environment, as well as on social systems. Landscapes are transformed and exploited for and by agriculture; the mining and shipping of natural resources leads to biodiversity loss and pollution among other impacts; climate mitigation measures may affect biodiversity and local communities; and the production and disposal of end-of-lifecycle products may affect ecosystem functioning. Therefore, the European Green Deal places a major focus on agriculture, resource mining, and other forms of land use. Environmental dimensions, such as biodiversity loss, ecosystem health, and climate change are central considerations, and are integrally interlinked with societal issues such as global justice, food security and health. In this Social Lab, approaches will be explored, scrutinised, and tested. for developing ethical and sustainable food production and fair land use that, at the same time, supports environmental, social and economic prosperity.
