Gender Capacity Building

Through a dedicated gender capacity-building programme, RE4GREEN strengthened consortium partners’ understanding of feminist and ecofeminist perspectives in research and innovation for the Green Transition. Drawing on an intersectional approach, the programme explored the links between gender, environmental justice, research ethics, and structural inequalities, while encouraging critical reflection on issues such as coloniality, inclusivity, and power dynamics in research. Through tailored training sessions, factsheets, a gender glossary, and practical guidance tools, partners were equipped to integrate gender-responsive and inclusive practices into their work, contributing to a more ethical, equitable, and socially just Green Transition.

Training Materials

The RE4GREEN Training Materials comprise a suite of practical micro-modules designed to support the integration of environmental sustainability, climate responsibility, and eco-justice considerations into research and innovation (R&I) practices. Developed within the RE4GREEN framework, these resources equip researchers, students, citizen scientists, ethics reviewers, and research ethics educators with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to identify and address environmental and climate-related ethical challenges throughout the research process. The training materials translate RE4GREEN’s ethics and integrity framework into accessible, practice-oriented learning resources, fostering responsible research conduct and helping ensure that R&I activities effectively contribute to the European Green Deal and the transition towards a sustainable and socially just society.

Policy Recommendations

Based on analysis conducted in the project, RE4GREEN partners are developing policy briefs targeting various policy-makers in the research and innovation governance ecosystem, including research funding organisations and different decision-makers in research organisations. The aim is to provide policy recommendations to incorporate environmental and climate ethics in the governance of research and innovation.

Guidelines

The RE4GREEN guidelines are based on three comprehensive reviews conducted during the project’s first year and have been developed through an iterative stakeholder engagement process involving RE4GREEN’s social labs. The result is three guidance documents aimed at a variety of stakeholders, providing practical advice on incorporating environmental ethics into research and innovation funding, planning and processes.

In the ‘Guidance report on incorporating the objectives of the “do no significant harm” principle in R&I’, Ferrari et al. discuss the normative dimensions of the ‘do no significant harm’ principle. After making valuable additions from the perspectives of environmental humanities, ecology, and transcultural studies, they suggest specific ways to operationalise it.

The documents compiled by Tzouvaras et al. in ‘Research ethics and integrity guidelines for R&I in the green transition’ include an environmental and ethical reinterpretation of the key principles of the European code of conduct; a toolkit for ethical considerations that go beyond significant harm; and guidelines for extending the mandate of research ethics councils. There are also two documents for working with and as citizen scientists.

In ‘Recommendations on Environmental and Climate Ethics Amendment of Risk Assessment Strategies’, Mehlich and Fischbach specify how environmental risk assessment can become more ethically oriented, providing a knowledge transfer aid that builds on the non-ethical expertise of researchers and helps them reflect on relevant issues before and during their research.

In its first policy brief, RE4GREEN focuses on institutional aspects of research ethics and integrity, presenting six recommendations for incorporating environmental ethical principles. Three more policy briefs are expected by autumn 2026.
